What if there was nothing to change?
What if you realised that all your habits where getting you what you wanted in life?
"But I have bad habits"
"I don't exercise enough"
"I don't save enough"
"I watch too much tv"
When you spend a life time trying to be someone you are not then you need to escape.
So what benefit are you getting from these so called bad habits.
Go and list every benefit you can find from these habits.
When did you decide they were bad?
Who's values are you injecting in your life that you think has 'good' habits compared to your so called 'bad' habits.
"Chains of habits are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken"
When you force yourself to do something, living outside your own values and not being truly yourself then you seek a pleasure to escape your perceived pain.
Sometimes there are more effective and healthy ways to get what you want in life than the habits you currently have.
So if you have decided that you want to change a habit try the following steps.
Create an exhaustive list of all the benefits that you are getting from the habit. Push yourself and include secondary and tertiary benefits. Only stop when you feel grateful for that habit and can say thank you
Ask yourself is this habit an escape from living outside my values? Or is this habit actually the most effective way I have found so far to fulfil a value?
If it's an escape - then what exactly are you escaping from? What would happen if you took the time to discover what was truly important to you? What if you organised your life so that you could move towards your values?
If it's a true value, then is this habit the most fulfilling way it can be expressed?
If you would like to change a habit, what habit will you replace it with?
Write down the habit you would like to take up. What are the action steps?
List 100 benefits of taking those actions or keep going until you see a shift in your behaviour.
Write down the habit you want to replace or stop doing.
Write down 100 drawbacks of taking that actions. Keep going until you see a shift in your behaviour.
